Black Bear Bread Co. is a quaint, neighborhood bakery, coffee shop, and seasonal cafe prepared to meet all of your caffeine and pastry needs. While on our Seaside trip last week, we had the chance to stop in and see what all the buzz was about, and we must tell you- we were pleasantly surprised. As you walk in, you are greeted by the ever-enticing aroma of freshly ground coffee, which is perfectly accompanied by the sweet smell of their baked goods that come from their bakery located in the building right behind the cafe. To the left of the entrance is an incredible pastry display case with everything from almond croissants to Texas-sized cinnamon rolls (we bet they did that to make us feel at home), which eventually turns into their coffee bar. Equipped with a beautifully crafted La Marzocco espresso machine, and elegantly placed latte mugs, Black Bear will have you ready to partake in the magic that is their beach side coffee experience.
Atmosphere (5 out of 5)
Cool, calm, and collected, this is a beachside paradise combined with a modern coffee shop. The shop has a crisp and clean black and white style that we love, it is simple and welcoming. One thing that you will notice is the gentle noise environment because while it is always busy, there is a sense of peace that is admitted throughout your soon to be favorite coffee hangout. It’s inside is always decorated for the season, whether it be a coffee themed Christmas tree, or brightly lit for springtime with window box flowers. We think you will love it here.
Parking/Location (5 out of 5)
Black Bear is one of the adorable Shops of Grayton. Just a little bit off 30a, it is an easy place to visit whether you’re staying near Seaside, Grayton Beach, or on your way to the next great adventure and need a caffeine boost. If you are staying in Watercolor or Seaside, it is a little bit down the road, approximately 6 or 7 minutes by golf cart or 5 by car depending on traffic. We liked that we were able to explore more of 30a than just where we were staying, so don’t let a little bit of distance deter you! When you see the bright colored bungalows, you know you’re in the right place. All of the Shops of Grayton share the central parking lot, so it could be difficult to find a spot if you visit at a busy time, but for a normal day, parking shouldn’t be a problem.
Drip Coffee/Espresso (4 out of 5)
If you are not familiar with Stumptown Coffee Roasters, now is the time to get to know them. Not only are they an incredible resource for all of your homebrewing questions, they are also nationally recognized coffee magicians. *A-bruh-ka-dab-ruh* I am sure this is what they say when they send off their beans to be served to the masses. I would if I were them. At Black Bear they serve Stumptown’s Hair Bender espresso, which is a delicately balanced coffee that helped Stumptown become who they are today. For the espresso-by-morning coffee person, some of the major tasting notes you might find are citrus and dark chocolate. [Want to give it a try at home? Visit this link and order it from the coffee mecca itself!] On drip you will find Holler Mountain, which is a pleasant, full-bodied blend. For the purist- some of the tasting notes you might find are caramel, blackberry, citrus and toffee with a creamy body. This organic blend is made up of a chocolatey Latin American coffee, and a brilliantly bright profiled African bean. Not a black coffee drinker? Be sure to check out their Brown Bear Latte, which is an espresso based breve (half & half) latte with hazelnut, a dash of woodblock chocolate, and topped off with cinnamon. No matter what you decided, we are sure you’ll fall in love like we did. Fair warning- coffee so lovely doesn’t last long!! (Bummer…guess you’ll have to order another round.)
Scope of Menu (5 out of 5)
It is way more than just a coffee shop. Black Bear offers a full breakfast, lunch, and bakery menu in addition to its delicious coffee. With fresh baked breads and seasonal ingredients, every dish is wholesome and delightful. Be sure to check out their pastries and breads behind the front counter. From homemade sourdough loaves to croissants to enormous cinnamon rolls, you won’t leave disappointed! They also offer breakfast staples like oatmeal and breakfast sandwiches in addition to tartines, salads, and sandwiches for lunch. Their coffee menu is limited; they serve espresso shots, cappuccinos, lattes, americanos, mochas, and drip coffees. However, all of their coffee comes from Stumptown Coffee Roasters, so you know every cup is top notch!PricingFor serving such high quality coffee, their coffee prices are extremely reasonable. It is only $2.50 for 12oz brewed coffee and $3 for espresso. The rest of the espresso drinks range from $3-5, which is for sure cheaper than you can find at some other coffee shops, making this the perfect spot to visit again and again! Their breakfast and lunch menu items range from $7-15.
Staff Interaction (5 out of 5)
The baristas and staff at Black Bear are truly incredible. One of the things we liked best while we were there was how friendly they were when we had questions about all of the delicious pastries, and took our sweet time in making a life-changing decision. Not to mention, they were quick to bring us our food, and if we are honest, there is something to be said about service with a smile. Perhaps the beach puts everyone in a good mood.
Black Bear Break Co. is the ideal coffee getaway. It is the perfect place to sit back, relax, and enjoy some great coffee with some great people.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Black Bear, and we can’t wait to return! Interested to hear more about our time in Florida? Check out our post about how to spend 48 hours in Seaside!
