Europe 2018: T Minus Two Weeks

The final countdown has officially begun! In two weeks, we will take off on our first international trip as Grounds for Travel!! We hope you are as excited as we are. During our 10 day adventure we will visit Italy, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland!! I know right…it’s like you can already taste the pasta! (*cue the Italian hand gesture*) We are so thrilled to share our stories with you, and hope that from our mistakes and from our successes, you will get in a good laugh and maybe learn a little something. Keep reading to get the inside scoop of gelato…just kidding…on what all you can be expecting to read about. Ready? Andiamo!

We’ll be starting our European adventure in Venice, Italy! Home of world famous canals, St. Mark’s Basilica, and the oldest cafe in the world, we can’t wait to wander through the winding streets and explore all that this unique city has to offer! We’re especially excited to visit Caffe Florian, which was established in Venice in 1720 and is still serving authentic coffee today!

While we’re in Italy, we will be taking a day trip from Venice to Milan. Milan is known as Italy’s most modern city. It is the host of two of Italy’s prized soccer teams, AC Milan and Inter, as well as the tallest modern skyscraper in the country. In order to get there, we will be taking a speed train with TrenItalia from Venice Porta Nuova to Milano Centrale. This trip will take us roughly 3 hours, and we have a lot to pack in! While we are here, we will be sure to visit the Duomo, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (the exquisite glass roofed mall of Milan), and Piazza di Santa Maria delle Grazie (home of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci). Fortunately, Milan is also home to an incredible third wave coffee shop, called Orsonero, run by a young married couple. We can’t wait to visit this city!

On day four, we will be heading to Salzburg, a fortress city that resides in the mountains. Can you hear the music? So can we!!! This beautiful European region is the birthplace of Mozart, and it even served as the backdrop for the Sound of Music!! Think we will see Julie Andrews? One of the things we hope to see here is the fountain at Resedenplatz Square…perhaps to find the fountain of youth. Never hurts to try, Right? We also are looking forward to encountering the Hohensalzburg Castle, which dates back to the 11th century.

After Austria we will be taking a detour to Munich, a center of art, history, and culture in Germany! While here, we hope to wander through the central square of Marienplatz, roam the English Garden, and visit the treasures in the famous Residenzmuseum. Not just a place for a history lesson, Munich is also a world-renowned hub of innovation. Fun fact: Munich is home to the BMW Museum, which is so massive that it even has its own zip code!

Leaving Munich, we will make a stop at Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, Neuschwanstein Castle! Built by eccentric King Ludwig II, this fortress in the sky is often known as “the castle of the fairy-tale king”. We can’t wait to hear the stories of this magnificent palace! From Neuschwansteain, we will take a bus to our last stop of our European adventure, Lucerne, Switzerland. We will be sure to visit the Kapellbrucke bridge, wander around Old Town Lucerne, and we will actually be able to take a trip up the majestic, snow-capped Swiss Alps!

With only 10 days to take in all of the sights, we know this trip is going to be a blast from start to finish! We’ve talked about everything we’re most excited to see, now what do you think? If you’ve visited any of these incredible countries, be sure to let us know your recommendations in the comments!
